Control and Adaptation (Thrust 3 - Dr. Howard Chizeck and Dr. Russ Tedrake, Thrust Leaders)
The Control and Adaptation thrust designs output devices and algorithms that form closed-loop control and adaptation between devices and humans. That is, it develops engineered systems that augment human sensorimotor control capabilities using closed-loop feedback and adaptation. This task is accomplished by combining fundamental science principles with flexible and highly functional sensorimotor devices driven by controllers capable of integrating state information from electromechanical sensors and neural pathways. These systems monitor sensorimotor, neuromuscular and biomechanical changes over time and adjust as required. Adaption capabilities for these assistive devices will enable “tailor-made” systems that meet the needs of individual users and that interface seamlessly during learning and operation.
