Bioscience Careers Seminar

The Bioscience Careers Seminar presents "Informal Science Education Careers" by Wendy Hansen, Ph.D., Current Science Content Manager for Portal to the Public at the Pacific Science Center, Seattle, WA.

Abstract:

What does a science museum have in common with a newspaper? Both are venues for informal science education -- the kind of learning where your audience is free to walk away or turn the page if you lose their interest. Dr. Hansen will describe some of the many careers and challenges involved in bringing science to the public, in particular at science museums and in popular science writing, and how an academic researcher can go about getting one of these careers.

Dr. Wendy Hansen works at Pacific Science Center, where she manages an exhibit and associated programs about current, local, health science research. She holds a BA in physics and French from Lewis & Clark College and a PhD in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining Pacific Science Center, she worked in science communication for a number of years, as a writer and editor-in-chief at the Berkeley Science Review while in graduate school, an AAAS Mass Media Fellow at the Los Angeles Times, and a freelance science writer and editor.
