Neuroscience and Ethics Engagement: From Gray Matters to an NSF Engineering Research Center

Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering
Suite 204
1414 NE 42nd St.
Seattle, WA 98105
Friday, November 4, 2016, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. PDT

This conference gathers experts in the fields of bioethics and neuroethics to think about ways of engaging ethics and science. The conference will take as its starting point recommendations from the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues report, “Gray Matters: Integrative Approaches for Neuroscience, Ethics, and Society.”

Several models of engagement discussed within the Gray Matters report will be examined and then efforts at ethics engagement conducted by the Neuroethics Research Thrust at the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering (CSNE) will be presented and critically assessed.

Two members of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues will be speaking, Dr. Daniel Sulmasy from the University of Chicago, and Dr. Christine Grady from the National Institutes of Health.

Who should attend: Members of the UW community who are interested in thinking about ways to integrate ethics with science, particularly neuroscience. This event is of particular interest to students and faculty in the sciences, ethics, and science and technology studies.

The event is open to the public, and RSVP is requested. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CSNE-ethics-workshop)
